Changes to First Street & Parking

Students, families, and community members will see some changes to First St the first time they come back to campus this school year.  As many have now discovered, the section of First St (shown left) is now one way traffic moving toward Monroe.  The changes were made in cooperation with the City of South Bend in an attempt to improve pedestrian safety for our students.

The changes enabled us to also add parking along First St that will be useful during the school day (outside of before/after school bus loading) and during school events.  Further details can be found below.

The biggest change people will face is not being able to turn right off Monroe onto to First St.  The city has placed a road block in what used to be the right lane of First St, as an overt reminder to not enter the new one-way.  You will also notice the two "Do Not Enter" signs on either side of First St.

Shown in the picture to the left is the new angled parking for school visitors that will be available during the school day between the hours of 8:30 to 2:30.  Our school buses will be lining up parallel to the sidewalks to deliver students in the morning, and to load students for home at 3:00 pm.  First St will remain open during these times and will no longer be blocked off by school buses at the end of the day.

The parking lot shown in the picture to the right is now "staff only" parking.  Visitor parking can be found directly in front of Chauncey Davis Elementary, and will be available for visitors at all times of the day (shown below).  This area will also serve as parent drop off and pick up.  We ask that parents quickly drop off students and allow others to then pull into these reserved spots.  Drivers will also notice there is now "no parking" on either side of the crosswalk in front of Chauncey Davis.

We appreciate everyone's patience as we all adapt to the new changes on First St at South Bend Schools.  We are hoping these improvements will reduce the risk of vehicle/pedestrian accidents and will enhance the safety of our students.
