SB one of 9 high schools statewide to receive WA Achievement Award

Math teachers Jackie Sanchez and Kelly Oblad and Principal Jason Nelson receive
WA Achievement Award from State Superintendent Reykdal
South Bend High School is a recipient of the 2016 Washington Achievement Award for student growth in mathematics.

The Washington Achievement Award is an extraordinary accomplishment and a direct reflection of our students' hard work, the dedication and effort of our quality teachers, and the support of our parents.

The Washington Achievement Awards are sponsored by the Washington State Board of Education and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, and is based on our school's performance on the Washington State Achievement Index. Washington's top-performing schools are recognized for achievement in seven categories: Overall Excellence, High Progress, English Language Arts Growth, Math Growth, Extended Graduation Rate, English Language Acquisition, and Achievement Gap.

South Bend's award is well deserved.  Under the leadership of Principal Jason Nelson, South Bend High School is one of 9 high schools in the state to receive a 2016 Achievement Award, and is the only high school in Pacific, Grays Harbor, and surrounding counties to receive a state award.  Principal Nelson and math teachers Jackie Sanchez and Kelly Oblad implemented several strategies that continue to impact student success.

Some of these include:
  • Clear focus on State Standards and curriculum alignment
  • Remedial support for struggling students
  • Focused teacher collaboration and planning
  • Accommodating all students (ELL, Special Needs, etc)
  • Updating curriculum materials
  • High expectations for student learning
The effort of our teachers continue to provide students with quality learning opportunities district-wide.  Care and persistence create a learning environment where students can succeed, and the Washington Achievement Award is just one means of validating the hard work of our students and staff.  Our community should be proud of this particular accomplishment and for the academic excellence our teachers and staff work to achieve in all aspects of the district.
