Construction Class Participates in 2017 CTE Showcase of Skills

South Bend High School's construction class is participating in the 2017 CTE (Career & Technical Education) Showcase of Skills.  Under the teaching and instruction of South Bend teacher Ryan McMurry, South Bend students will join other secondary and post-secondary students from across the state in a one-day competition at the Washington Capitol in Olympia.

In all, 25 teams received a grant to participate in the competition.  South Bend's team is building energy-efficient, portable, homeless shelters.  The competition will highlight skills learned in South Bend's construction program, and includes all aspects of construction.  When complete, 25 of these "tiny homes" will be put to immediate use throughout Washington State.

These types of projects are not new to the South Bend construction program.  Under Mr. McMurry's instruction, his students have constructed homes for Habitat for Humanity, helped with construction on the new Grace Community Church, provide numerous small construction projects in the community, and are currently working on a building for the Pacific County Historical Society.

It is important for students to put their learned skills to work.  This experience allows our kids to learn in a hands-on manner while providing a needed service to our community.
