University of Washington courses offered at SB

South Bend High School is now offering University of Washington courses to SB juniors and seniors right here at our South Bend campus, beginning this school year.

Julie Haugan, who also teaches Advanced Placement courses at South Bend, will be using UW curriculum and materials to offer Eng 111 (English Comp: Literature) and Eng 131 (English Comp: Exposition), where South Bend students will earn UW credit.  These credits will also transfer to any university state-wide.

Courses are official UW courses – listed in the UW course catalog and taught regularly on the UW campus – and are taught by highly qualified high school teachers who are approved and trained by UW faculty. UWHS teachers follow the same curriculum and grading standards as those courses taught on the UW campus. Students in the course earn high school credit and also have the option to register to earn UW credit. The opportunity to earn both high school and college credit in the same course is what makes this a "dual credit" or "concurrent enrollment" program. In Washington State, this model is referred to as "College in the High School."

We believe students should have the same opportunities as students in larger, urban schools.  This program allows SB students to earn both high school and university credit without having to travel to a community college.  Jason Nelson, high school principal, applied for a grant and received funding to provide these opportunities at little to no cost to the student or the school. We see this as yet another great opportunity for South Bend students.

South Bend school district looks to expand these offerings as the program continues to develop.  Eventually, we hope to offer UW classes in computer science, humanities, math & science and World language.

Questions about this program can be directed to Mr. Jason Nelson, jnelson@southbendschools.org.
